Of the 853,452 HIV/AIDS cases reported to the CDC through December 2001, 4 percent were among persons aged 13-24. Infections among adolescents aged 13-19 years old are on the rise. Among the 13-19 years old diagnoses, 61 percent were among Blacks while 21 percent were Hispanics. As of December 2001, young Black females aged 13-19 years old represented 72 percent of all young women diagnosed with HIV (but who had not developed AIDS). Persons aged 13-24 accounted for 13 percent of HIV (not AIDS) reported in 2001 of which 45 percent in this age group were females.
